Elden Ring: Nightreign – Run 1

I woke up on Sunday morning with every intention of playing more Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. I will get back to that, but I had an opportunity to play Elden Ring: Nightreign with my friends, and I decided that would be more fun to stream.

On paper, Nightreign is the kind of game that really shouldn’t work and doesn’t make sense, sampling from multiple different genres and mixing them with the typical feel and gameplay loop of Souls games. It sounds like a recipe for nondescript slurry.

And yet, the final product comes together remarkably well, at least when I’m playing with friends over Discord. (I’ve had miserable experiences playing with random players online.) There’s a lot of tactical thinking that happens moment-to-moment, adjusting to what the conditions are and where we can safely fight as the Nightrain closes in.

The end result is a highly condensed and kinetic Soulsborn experience that kept me on my toes even as my obviously more skilled friends carried me through most of it. I imagine there will come a point where my map knowledge finally starts to bear fruit and I can start to help make those calls on the fly, rather than just rely on my team to do that work for me.

That’ll take practice, but I’ll get there.
