Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Part 3-1
If we’re lucky, we might actually be able to meet an Assassin in this Pirate game called Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

I’ve spoken to numerous over the years about Black Flag, and most of them, myself included, recall that the game feels more like a pirate adventure than an Assassin’s Creed game. In most people’s memory, the material involving the conflict between the Templars and the Assassins doesn’t become part of the plot until they’re twenty or more hours into the game.
And yet, here we are. We’re four and a half hours in and already being introduced to the order and their Creed. It’s a stark contrast to the memory that most people have in their head with this game.
Looking at what we did in this episode, however, goes a large part into explaining why. To get to this mission, we had to cross almost the entire map, from one half of the ocean to the other half. In doing so, we passed numerous side activities like forts and the assassin missions Captain Kidd told us about towards the end of the last batch of episodes. It’s quite natural to lose yourself in those quests, as I’m almost certain I did the first time. So much so that all of this could easily become “late game content” for the find of player draw to Ubisoft-style open world games.
It goes to show how small decisions, both from us and in design, can have dramatic effects on how players perceive the games they play.
