Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Part 4-2

Another part of tackling the nostalgia I had for Black Flag head on is grappling with the reality of what Ubisoft is like as an employer, both now and at the time. We know the creative director was forcing almost every major game into the same template because it was a formula that he personally liked. We know that they went out of their way to make protagonists men because it was believed that a game lead by a female character wouldn’t sell as well. And we also know about the sexual misconduct that was allegedly running rampant in Ubisoft’s offices.
And while none of this was known at the time Black Flag was released, it was no less true back then as it was when all of this was being reported. Because Assassin’s Creed is a pillar propping up Ubisoft, it’s difficult to play an AC game without reflecting on that.
There’s a darkness sitting at the base of Ubisoft, and I wonder whether playing this game on stream, even as old as it is, contributes to that darkness in some way.
