As I listen to myself talk about Black Flag, I think something I’m starting to realize is that reason I keep circling back onto the subject of the open world and Ubisoft is that I have ultimately run out of things to say about the actual story and plot.
We’ve spent so much time meandering without making any tangible progress towards a goal. And even now that we’re gaining momentum, there’s an implicit knowledge in the back of my head that none of this will amount of anything for a franchise that’s failed to tell a complete story for the past thirteen years.
None of us knew, at the time, where Black Flag’s success would take the franchise. Now that we do, I’m looking at it in an entirely different light.
