Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Part 8-3 (A Post-Game Conversation)

I was initially afraid to play Black Flag because I remembered how much of the game was side activities and diversions from the main story. And while I eventually gave it a shot, in retrospect I should have maintained my stance. I should have ended the Assassin’s Creed series at AC3 like I originally planned, but I was too swept up in momentum to understand that.
This is something I realized while prepping for this stream by working to upgrade the Jackdaw. Even though I was just roaming the seas looking for ships and materials, I was having fun and enjoying the moment. Doubtlessly, had I been able and willing to commit to more of that before other sessions, the whole production would’ve been much smoother. We simply wouldn’t have gotten stuck on so many ship battles because we would’ve been more prepared. I ruined this experience for myself in ways I could have easily planned for and worked to prevent had I been more careful.
It is also why I will no longer be playing through the series on this channel, because as it progresses this level of busywork becomes increasingly mandatory. I simply cannot take the risk that another Let’s Play will be compromised the way this one was.
However, despite those hiccups, I am ultimately glad that I came back to Black Flag and the rest of the early Assassin’s Creed games. They reminded me of both why I fell in love with the series in the first place and why I have ultimately begun to drift apart from it as it doubles down on design decisions that I am no longer interested in. Shadows was my last straw, and I know better than to subject myself to further disappointment. The magic of those early games is gone, and I am okay with that. I am willing and prepared to move on.
To that end, by the time this post goes live, my Twitch viewers will already by aware of my next project. I hope you all join me and a few of my friends as we play through Disco Elysium. It will not be my first run, but I made sure to bring in some fresh faces to color the experience.
