Disco Elysium – Part 2-1

If we’re lucky, this time we won’t have an emotional breakdown after talking to the witness. Surely, we can avoid making that mistake again.

Andre has been ribbing us in a good-natured way about how we’ve spent most of our time in Disco just walking around the immediate vicinity of the Whirling-in-Rags hospice, but I think there’s something really cool about that.

It reminds me of the old Warren Spector quote, about how his dream game is an RPG that takes place entirely within a city block. Rather than the sprawling, oversized maps that we’re used to exploring in games like Black Flag, the setting would focus on density. A city block dense with the people that live within in, enough to carry the length of a full campaign.

While Disco Elysium doesn’t technically fit that description, it embodies the soul of it. Rather than whisk us away to different zones to continue our investigation, almost everything in the game is within walking distance of the Whirling-in-Rags. We’ve spent our entire game time right here, and yet because the location has so much to offer us, we’ve not yet grown bored. If anything, it’s clear that there’s so much more for us to do now that we’re in the middle of actively solving a murder.

And we’ve only scratched the surface.
