There is so much to discuss regarding the setting of Disco Elysium, from the failed communist uprising to the existence of The Pale and how is separates the world into isolas, that it would be impossible to do it justice in the space I allocate to one of these posts.
So instead, I will take this moment to acknowledge that this is not the first work to feature this setting. Before developing Disco, one of the lead writers, Robert Kurvitz, wrote a novel called “Sacred and Terrible Air”. I never read it, though I probably should.
If you’re interested, I recommend you do as I plan to and watched WoolieVersus’s “Let’s Read” of the book. While not required reading, fans of Disco often cite it as fantastic supplemental material if you’re already fond of the game.
