Disco Elysium – Part 10-5

With no suspects and no other leads, there is only one place left to go. The islet off the coast is the only remaining potential origin point for the gunshot. If our killer isn’t there: I have no idea where they could be.

When you think about it, Harrier Du Bois has much in common with the city he works in as a police officer. Specifically, both of them are haunted by a past that they can no longer remember, and a future that has been lost to them. A while back, a friend of mine linked me to an essay about the game titled “Turning From the Ruin: A Hauntological Analysis of ZA/UM’s Disco Elysium” by Julia Evkall. There’s a section in that piece that discusses this scene in depth, where Harry confronts the memory of his ex-wife and the reason she left him.

Specifically, Evkall focuses on the idea that Harry has never successfully mourned the loss of his relationship with her, which has led to it “haunting” him, to the point where retrograde amnesia might be the best case scenario since it affords him an opportunity to make a clean break for the man he once was.

This is in sharp contrast to the “fire man” we’re about to meet.
