Ape Escape – Part 1-2

We’ve gotten our feet wet in the monkey catching business, but time stops for no child. Look out, apes, because we’ve gotcha number!

I think what surprised me most about playing Ape Escape is how quickly I slid back into the comfortable familiarity I once had with this control setup, considering just how different it is from most of the games I play these days. While it hasn’t been completely hassle free, with the boat and slingshot being notable examples, I haven’t been unduly set back by fumbling with the controls at any point thus far.

As stream chat has noted, the game appears to have accounted for the janky control schemes with its level design. It doesn’t expect me to do anything fancy with the camera because it knows my ability to maneuver it is very limited. Likewise, I am not asked to do many precise movements under a time pressure. The game is too floaty and imprecise for such movements, and the team who developed it seemed fully aware of that.

That said, though the problems aren’t game breaking, they do still exist. Those boat controls are only satisfactory because I am in no danger while piloting the boat. If I had even one obstacle in my path while rowing it, it would suddenly become a major issue. Likewise, though I am not required to be much precise aiming with the slingshot, it is unwieldy even with a first person camera.

They may be mere blemishes on an otherwise spotless package so far, but they are noticeable all the same.
