I remember hearing someone (l think it was SuperBunnyHop but I’m not sure) say that “Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain was one of the most successful villain propaganda pieces in gaming history”, for the way that it gets the player to empathize with Big Boss, despite the fact that he brainwashing hundreds of soldiers into following him, committing countless war crimes along the way.
In many ways, the same narrative trick is being applied here, both to Enzo and the player. Even if we know that the mafia aren’t to be trifled with, we’re nonetheless given a gilded image what life is like working under them. For Don Torrisi, these are little more than table scraps, but to Enzo this is more than he could have ever hoped for in the mines. And since we’re playing as Enzo, we sympathize with him, and we’re happy to see that he’s being treated well.
It makes us understand why he would volunteer to race for the Don, since no one else was available to do so. And soon, it will compel him to go much further.
