As we said during the recording, scenes like the party serve two crucial purposes for Mafia: The Old Country.
First, it dispels the tension of the execution right before Enzo gets sworn in. While it’s traditionally to think of the overall plot as a gradually rising action, leading up to a climax and ensuing falling action, in truth most of the time this will be experienced as a series of mini-arcs, that each have their own peaks also the track. The release after a tense scene in necessary for the player, because it gives them time to really work through those major plot beats and their feelings on them.
Secondly, and equally as important, this helps sell why Enzo would be enraptured by the life he has been thrust into. It’s easy for us, possibly even for him, to believe that he had a choice in the matter. While that could be true to some degree, in all honestly he had very little, if any, true autonomy. He cannot assert his will, or else he’d invite great retribution upon himself.
A fact that will grow even more clear as we progress through the game.
