Our good buddy Vito, from Mafia 2, is back. And this time, he’s one of our big three contacts.

There’s a lite element of emergent, immersive sim-like gameplay I’m seeing here in Mafia that I never saw in the other Mafia games I played up until now. It’s something that, as an avid fan of games like Hitman and Dishonored, I can appreciate. It’s similar to how Ubisoft open-world game design felt at it’s peak, in the Far Cry 3 and 4 days.
Each of these little zones of operation exist in self-contained ecosystems – dioramas for the player to experiment with. These small interactions, and the interplay between stealth and gunplay, are a breeding down for all sorts of moments where guards can react to what we’re doing, potentially calling for reinforcements or falling victim to a crate dropping onto them from on high.
It’s just enough of a splash of the old immersive sim formula to give us room to think about what we’re going to do without hampering the game’s otherwise fast-paced gameplay loop.
