I like how Father James and Donovan represent the angel and devil respectively talking over Lincoln’s shoulder symbolically in the lead-up to this final choice. As fun and helpful as Donovan is, he is always tempting us to go for the option that causes the most carnage, and I think it’s no coincidence that he’s a white man while the more down-to-Earth and reasonable Father is African-American.
Father James, if anything, represents the part of Lincoln Clay that is still bound up in the community that he lost when Sammy and Ellis were murdered by the Marcanos. This final decision is a crossroads, where Lincoln can choose to hold on to the humanity that thrust him onto the path of vengeance in the first place, or kill his soul in order to replace Sal Marcano, becoming no different from the very mobster he fought against.
It is a choice that we must now make.
