007 First Light – Part 1-1
Weirdly enough, even though we’ve finished with Zero Parades, we’re not done with spy fiction. IO Interactive, the makers of the legendary Hitman series, come to us with their take of a similarly legendary super spy.

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot, especially playing games like this that take place in the “real world,” is how quick a certain vocal element to internet discourse is to immediately dismiss of work of fiction because it isn’t “realistic.” And in doing so, they often fail to engage in the idea of fiction and storytelling. They don’t process or understand the emotional or thematic content of the work, or what it might be trying to say about people or the world at large.
It is simply a toy to be gawked at and discarded, rather than a vehicle with which a creative team can make statements.
On that subject, I like this scene in Iceland as an introduction to this iteration of the character. It demonstrates his grit and determination in the face of odds he is wholly unqualified to face up against, fighting a lethal nerve agent, groups of mercenaries, and hypothermia. Additionally, we get introduced to his ability to make judgements in the field, ignoring orders from people in authority and disregarding the odds, to make the correct decision.
It sets up the theme of the human element that we’re going to delve into later on.
