007 First Light – Part 4-1

As I said in the recording, this is a plot point that could only come from the Covid era: The era of ‘AI’ encroachment. It would be all too easy to build a fictional, rouge AI system that logically concludes that humanity should be exterminated or controlled. Many science fiction plots have been built around the concept, some of which are among the pinnacle of their crafts.
Instead, as if ripped straight from increasingly evergreen headlines, THEIA is more alike to the generative ‘AI’, learning language models that are being shoved down our throats at all hours of the day. It is not an omniscient, all-seeing, all-knowing machine that makes flawless logical deductions based on the available data. Like the real life counterparts in Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, etc, it is simply churning through data in order to produce “findings” that look like they could be reasonable correct if one doesn’t look into them too closely.
And just like the grifters in our world (Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman to name a few), to acknowledge this fallibility would be to admit that the technology is not fit for purpose. Therefore, Sir British Rich Guy concludes that the grift must continue, even if that means sending his psychopathic son to stage world events to fit the false narratives THEIA has created.
This scenario frames James Bond as the human element, using M’s own parlance. He is the one who uses his own intuitive understanding of the world to interrogate those false conclusions and make the right call while everyone else is too afraid to use their own reasoning. This was set up as far back as the very first mission of the game, where he succeeds despite a reported 99.9% chance of failure.
It’s a contemporary take on old ideas, remixed for a new context. With that, IO has done a brilliant job modernizing the spy fiction of James Bond for the new era.
