Ape Escape – Part 2-1
By this point in Ape Escape, we’ve finished over half of the its stages. However, these next stages are going to be more demanding that any we’ve encountered up to now. The real monkey business starts here!

Looking back, it also feels like every stage up to this one was just preamble. Now that our gadget selection is mostly complete (and specifically now that we have the Sky Flyer) these mid-to-late game levels are much larger than more sprawling than any of the ones we’ve been to yet.
Of note are the “boss stages”, which often have multiple parts and subsections to them, like a series of miniature Ape Escape stages stitching into one ultra-large one. Technically, we just need to make it to the end and defeat the boss. In practical terms, we are often gated by the need to capture a minimum number of monkeys in order to unlock a door or other barrier that opens the next subsection of the stage.
It does a good job of selling the grandeur of these boss stages in comparison to the normal levels. Seeing that “catch Specter” icon on the bottom right sells that the stage we’re on is one of “the big ones”.
