Ape Escape – Part 2-4

Our final opponent awaits us… just as soon as we finish navigating this castle.

The designers play a clever trick with the way they dole out gadgets. By limiting what we have access to in the early game, we’re guided by the design team into their intended experience. We can see monkeys that are just out of our reach, which does double duty in getting us to anticipate what future gadgets we can obtain. And yet, often we’ll need to capture exactly enough monkeys so that we’re forced to go into every room at least once on our first visit.

Every gadget has a few monkeys from earlier levels locked behind it, with the Sky Flyer as an especially obvious example. Once we get it, the majority of the stages from before its introduction can be 100% completed. And yet, not all of them can. It’s not until the Magic Punch is unlocked post-game that we can catch every single monkey, meaning that there will always be at least a few stragglers for players to miss before this point.

And next time, we’ll keep working on clearing them out.
