Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Part 6-3

At last, we’re starting to make meaningful progress as far as Black Flag’s main story is concerned. Shame that progress only starts near the end of it.

If you’re curious to hear more about my opinion on the parkour system in Assassin’s Creed and most of its incremental improves robbed it of its charms, you can check out Whitelight’s video on that topic. He spent an hour giving the topic more justice than I could in a written post like this one.

It’s interesting that the story of Edward Kenway reflects what is ultimately the story of Assassin’s Creed after Desmond dies: A lack of focus. This story sets up the ideas of The Sage, and Juno try to escape the internet by inhabiting a human body. At the time, the expectation was for this to become the basis for the future of the franchise.

But as we all know, it didn’t play out satisfactorily. Juno’s defeat wasn’t even in the video games; That happened in the Assassin’s Creed comic books. Between Juno and Layla, neither big plot point has been given adequate resolution. One might even argue Desmond’s finale was undermined as well, but at least he had one.

It makes it hard to be invested when we know there’s likely no end in sight.
