Disco Elysium – Part 1-4

Okay. We’ve lost our badge, and our gun. We don’t remember anything about ourselves, but our co-workers appear to resent us. We’ve had to deal with two aggressively homophobic children all morning. Oh, and the dead body we want to investigate is still hanging from a tree.

This day can’t get worse for Andre Doucet and I, can it?

Alright, so it turns out that things can get worse. In fact, the past few hours of game time crushed Rapheal’s confidence so completely that he could no longer bring himself to continue with the case.

I’m actually happy that we got a game over so quickly, just to show what happens when we fail. Something that sets Disco Elysium apart is that failing a check is often more amusing than succeeding at it. Failure just leads to another punchline.

It’s a stark contrast to other RPGs in the space, like Baldur’s Gate 3. Games often do a bad job at making failure interesting, which is what so often leads to save scumming behavior.

After all, did I really fail if I chose to name myself Raphael Ambrosius Costeau?
