One of the fascinating aspects of this setting is that way that the mundane and the supernatural so casually intermingle with each other in ways that make it truly difficult to identify when we’ve crossed the threshold into something out of the ordinary. This is a brand of urban fantasy that I devour, where it’s unclear how much, if any, of what’s going on here can be explained by extrasensory phenomena. Inland Empire is convinced that there’s a supernatural explanation for the Doomed Commercial Area, but it is an unreliable skill, prone to being proven wrong by its siblings in our head.
Perhaps what is truly terrifying is the idea that there is a rational and reasonable explanation for all of this. Perhaps it would be easier to say that some demon or monster caused all of these businesses to fail. If such were the case, then it couldn’t possibly come down to individual decisions clashing with the mandates and reality of capital and the ever hungry economy that tramples the common man under its boot.
And perhaps either way, it is all the more commendable that a novelty dice maker is able to carve out her own existence despite all of that.
