Mafia 2: Definitive Edition – Part 1-1

Going in blind worked surprisingly well for Mafia 1, so let’s see if Mafia 2 gives us the same luck! Surely, we’ll eventually find a story in which crime pays.

If anyone is curious what is new with my setup, I used to have it such that OBS was recording my “Desktop Audio”, including the game and Discord, as a singular track. If I wanted to audio balance them, I would not be able to use the Audio Mixer on OBS to do so. However, a relatively recent update in OBS allows me to setup an individual application as an audio source, as I discovered when looking up a tutorial. I’m encouraged by this initial test run. Barring my need to keep adjust audio levels, this turned out well. Much of this year as been working to improve myself in many aspects of my life, and I’m happy that streaming is one of them.

As for the intro, I’m impressed that so far we’re 3 for 3 when it comes to protagonists endearing themselves to me right from the start. Like Tommy before him, and Enzo long after, Vito is instantly relatable, despite the sheer number of people he murders in his criminal enterprises.

I think part of that has to do with how all three of them embody the working class man to different degrees, and how the working man struggles to find prosperity over various eras of American (and Italian) history. Even if one isn’t Italian (and I am on my father’s side), they should at least be able to relate to the working man trying to help his family out of a debt accrued through no fault of their own.

There’s an intrinsic sense of humanity to be found in that common ground.
