Mafia: Definitive Edition – Part 2-4

Okay, the second-in-commander has betrayed us, and we’ve killed teenagers, federal agents, and a few hired goons. Surely now it won’t get any worse. Things have to start improving soon, right?

Watching this back puts me in the mind of all the criticisms levied at Uncharted and the way that those games pretend that you aren’t murdering tons of people in every firefight. Similarly to Nathan Drake, Tommy always appears forthright and merciful in almost every cutscene. Outside of gameplay, the only person he’s killed is the brothel manager.

And again, since the original version of this game was released in 2002, before we had the language required to discuss this, it’s not that strange. These days, there would likely be cries of ludonarrative dissonance, but back then most games were like this.

It’s not really a flaw so much as it is an observation of how game design has changed in the time since.
