Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Part 5-1

The Golden Age of Piracy appears to be coming soon to an ignoble end. But can we salvage what’s left before the worst comes to pass?

If you’re interesting in the retrospective article that was brought up in the stream chat, you can find it here.

His opinions both clash and compliment with my own in ways I find fascinating. Something I want to focus on though is that while he clearly had more fun with Black Flag than I am now, he agrees on several of my major points of frustration with the game. In particular, we both agree that the story is spread thin and that the game map is too large for what it’s trying to do. It’s something akin to video game junk food, a pass-time meant to placate rather than satiate.

While I disagree with him on Revelations, I at least understand where he’s coming from. He’s correctly touched on the point where Assassin’s Creed is at its strongest when it’s not trying to be an open-world game, and in that spirit Revelations is best specifically because the dev team was rushed for time and weren’t able to pollute the world with as much needless side content as other games in the series.

If only we could go back to the days of more manageable maps.
