I’ve spoken about revenge as a motivation multiple times on this show, because it’s a recurring motif in many video game stories. It’s an easy way to set up a character for the kind of campaigns we see in a lot of AAA gaming, while establishing a direct connection to the primary antagonist. Mafia 3 is no different in this respect. Revenge is the perfect excuse for Lincoln Clay to go on a rampage against the Mafia.
That said, I appreciate that the game at least acknowledges how destructive the path he’s on will inevitably be. We are doing nothing more than inflicting our trauma onto others. There’s no healing to be done through any of this.
I have deeper thoughts on this subject, and how the game mechanically glorifies violence as all open-world games in this vein inevitably, but that’s is best left explored another day.
