Mafia 3: Definitive Edition – Part 4-1

I did a bit of off-screen grinding to prepare us for the next part of our revenge tour against the Mafia 3: Definitive Edition. So now, we can take control of another district of New Bordeaux.

Andre opened this Let’s Play by saying that many people don’t like Mafia 3 compared to other games in the series, and I can honestly understand why. I had the benefit of knowing that this was going to be something close to an Ubisoft open-world game ahead of time, so I was prepared for the structural change. However, I could easily see an alternate universe where I was blindsided by the shift and resentful for it.

These days, I tend to lean more towards linear, more directed experiences over something like this, where I’m basically checking stuff off of a map without putting too much thought into what I’m doing and why. I’ve been making a conscious effort to eliminate games from my diet that are more busywork than genuine fun, and part of that was cutting back on these types of games.

And yet, I am genuinely having fun with Mafia 3. I don’t think I would even choose it over The Old Country, but it’s still a good game that brings me joy.

I think the debate on which game is better fundamentally comes down to whether or not the player is up for an open-world sandbox, or if they want something more curated and directed.
