Another core problem I have with Directive 8020 is that the monster is so obviously overpowered and threatening that it’s insane that any of the survivors even have a chance at staying alive. With the whole ship covered in biomass, literally any part of it could spontaneously turn into a monster and devour one of them.
Obviously it can’t do that because we wouldn’t have a plot if it did, but the net result is that it feels like the monster is holding back in the interest of being a fair sport. It should have killed us all long ago.
It would’ve made more sense to depower it in some way, or inhibit it so that there’s a reason our survivors aren’t killed.
